This course provides a comprehensive overview of the principles of safety science, improvement science, and the foundational role of quality and safety in nursing practice. Concepts and frameworks of High Reliability Organizations (HROs) are explored, including the cultivation of a Just and accountable culture to minimize harm to patients and providers. Foundations of healthcare improvement are described, featuring established models such as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) model, Lean Six Sigma, and DMAIC. These core competencies set the stage for the collaborative implementation of a quality improvement project in the second portion of the course, which focuses on systemic change.
